Two Worlds of Oblivion Page 26

“Hello, beautiful,” Jemin’s voice came from the threshold behind her. Her eyes didn’t open for fear it was just an illusion.

  “Hello,” she whispered.

Pen’s hooves clicked toward the door, and he gave a soft screech that was almost musical.

Maray still didn’t know if she had dreamed that kiss in the dungeons, if her mind had played a beautiful trick on her when she’d been about to die. And the thought of confronting Jemin about it was almost as scary as the echo of Rhia’s metallic laughter. Hadn’t he said they couldn’t be together? What had changed? Why play with her emotions with his comment when he thought he wasn’t good enough for her? ‘Beautiful’…

Eventually, Maray turned around and found Jemin petting the Gurnyak’s head and smiling widely. “Oh, you were talking to Pen?” Her lips twitched at the image.

Jemin looked up, face unreadable despite his smile. “Depends.”

  “On what?”

“If you’d rather I had been.”

Slowly, Maray got to her feet and smoothed her cloak, buying herself some time before she had to look back into those bright-blue eyes that made her wish there were no titles and stations or even magic. Just him would be enough. What if she told him the truth: that she felt for him exactly the same way he did for her? Or what if she pretended there was nothing between them? She knew whatever she said, it wouldn’t make their situation easier, so she sighed, trying to make up her mind which option to choose.

Jemin’s caramel hair bounced in the sunlight as he playfully scratched Pen’s forehead.

“Would you rather I’d rather you talked to him?” she asked instead of settling for any option.

Jemin straightened and took a step toward her, the smile now touching his eyes, making them light up like two topazes. Two gemstones.

  “Gem,” Maray whispered.

  He raised one eyebrow.

“So they finally convinced you to use my nickname,” he commented.

Maray shook her head at him. “Not that nickname. Gem, with a G. Sounds the same as Jem but tells who you really are.” It was the most she could give him for now, until she understood how Allinan worked; what being a Princess of Allinan meant.

Jemin eyed her, pensive and wordless, blue fire burning behind his irises, stirring the flames in her own chest, before he stepped closer until his face was just above hers.

“Not Pen. You.” Maray clarified, her stomach brimming with butterflies as he leaned in to kiss her.

“I know,” he murmured before his velvet lips brushed hers, and Maray closed her eyes, ready to forget—for now—that they were from two different worlds.
